Mrs. Peterson’s Kindergarten class is busy planning for a Mother’s Day breakfast on the morning of May 8th.  In math everyone is learning ways to solve addition and subtraction problems.   The class is writing dictated sentences and reading and writing narratives.  Look for information coming home about Kindergarten Graduation in June.

Mrs. Santoro’s 1st graders have been working hard reading chapter books.  We have a special time each day where we read silently, partner read, and read to the teacher.  In math we have been working on problem solving.  The children use many tools to do this, such as, rulers, templates, money, dice, clocks, and a hundreds chart.  The children continue to enjoy writer’s workshop and write fictional and non-fictional stories daily.

Mrs. Dinsmore’s 2nd grade class is having a taste of spring with a blooming jungle in the classroom.  We have enjoyed watching the plants turn from seedling to sprout to leafy plant.  Our botany experiment will continue as we also planted basil seeds.  Writer’s Workshop will be closing out the year with a unit on Poetry.  Students will read and practice an assortment of different poem styles, all with an emphasis on word choice.  In math we are focusing on decimals, place value, and multiplication.  Reading and Social Studies have us learning about maps and atlases.

Mrs. Schulte’s 2nd and 3rd grade class are completing a WEBQUEST on The Chalk Box Kid.  This is an internet activity where the students gather information and complete projects based on the book they are reading or have just finished reading.  Our last novel for the year is still up in the air.  The weather and the water cycle unit is complete and now we move to caterpillars and butterflies in science.

Mr. Cady’s 4th and 5th grade is reading Bridge to Terabithia as a class and discussing friendship, the theme of the book.  We are talking about ways to make friends and ways to keep them.  The students are making friendship bracelets which they must give to a friend.  In science we are studying climate and weather which is appropriate for this time of year.  We did a fun experiment in class showing what happens when a cold front meets up with a warm front.

Thank You

Home Stretch!

We hope this newsletter finds our school community in good spirits.  The high school is tying up the loose ends of a very successful year.

As we put closure on the school year, we also put closure on the career of Carrick Remaley. Mr. Remaley is bidding farewell to BFHS after 20+ years of service.  We wish him luck on his future endeavors.

In the beginning of our school year, our goal was to work on consistency, communication, and school spirit. We have tried to improve in all these areas.  If you have any comments about our successes or non-successes, please let the high school office know.

Congratulations to our spring sports programs.  At the time of this writing two of our spring sports qualified for post- season play, baseball, golf.

Middle School

BOUNDARY COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL
MAY 2008

The 2007-2008 school year is quickly drawing to a close.  We are now done with the spring ISAT testing finished and the preliminary results are very encouraging.  The students have made significant gains.  The intervention classes that we started this fall have proven to be very successful and a majority of the students in these classes have made proficiency on their ISAT tests.  We would like to salute these students for their diligence and also thank Mrs. Laura Nishek for her dedication to the academic progress of her students.  Final test scores will be sent home late this summer.

The 8th grade band under the direction of Rachel Gordon did an outstanding job at this years North Idaho competition held at North Idaho College.  Congratulations to Ms. Gordon and the band for their outstanding performance.  The last band concert of the year will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 7:00 PM in the Becker auditorium and everyone is invited to attend.

Move up day for next years 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will be held on the morning of Thursday May 22nd.  Students from the elementary schools who will be attending BCMS next year will have the opportunity to tour the school and meet their teachers.  This fall before school starts, we will also be hosting transition day for all 6th graders.  It is our hope that by doing this, we will be able to make the move from elementary school to the middle school smoother and less stressful.  Information will be sent out in August as well as articles in the Bonners Ferry Herald.

The end of year schedule is falling in place and we will try to provide and update on some of the events.  The sixth graders will be attending science day at Silverwood on Wednesday, May 14th.   The annual eighth grade trip to Silverwood will be on Wednesday, May 21st.   The big event of the year of course is the 8th grade promotion, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 5th at 6:30 PM.  The ceremony is followed by a dance, which runs until 11:00 PM.  We invite you to attend any or all of these exciting events.

If you have any questions regarding any of these events, please contact the office at 267-5852, or just stop by and visit.
